Reliable Bag Filtration for Industrial Liquids

Bag filtration is one of the most widely used methods of liquid filtration because it is simple, scalable and cost-effective. A bag filter system normally consists of a pressure-rated vessel, a support basket and a replaceable filter bag. Liquid enters the vessel, passes through the filter bag and exits after suspended solids have been captured by the filter media.

The system can be configured for light-duty flows, high-volume process lines, chemical compatibility requirements or applications where operators need fast and straightforward filter bag changeout. Depending on the application, vessels may be stainless steel, non-metallic or custom fabricated.

Monarch Asia Pacific can support both new installations and replacement requirements, including vessels, filter bags, cleanable baskets, strainers, fabricated components and filtration skids.

Common uses include:

  • Process water filtration
  • Cooling water and wash water
  • Chemical process liquids
  • Paints, inks, coatings and resins
  • Food and beverage process fluids
  • Pre-filtration before pumps, valves or equipment
How a GAF Bag Filter System Works

How a Bag Filter System Works

In a typical bag filter vessel, contaminated liquid enters the housing and is directed into the filter bag. The filter bag is supported by a perforated basket so that the bag remains correctly positioned during operation.

As liquid passes through the filter bag, suspended particles are captured either on the surface of the media or within the depth of the material. The filtered liquid then exits the vessel and continues through the process line.

When the filter bag reaches its dirt-holding limit, it can be removed and replaced. In some applications, a cleanable stainless steel basket may be used instead of a disposable filter bag.

  • Simple pressure-vessel filtration principle
  • Suitable for many liquid types and viscosities
  • Filter bags available in a wide range of micron ratings
  • Single-bag and multi-bag configurations available

Why Use Bag Filters?

Economical Filtration

Bag filter systems generally offer low capital cost, simple operation and practical replacement media for many liquid filtration duties.

High Dirt-Holding Capacity

The filter bag provides a useful filtration area and can hold a significant amount of retained solids when correctly sized.

Easy Changeout

Filter bags are normally quick to remove and replace, helping reduce maintenance time and simplify routine servicing.

Scalable Vessel Options

Systems can be supplied as single-bag vessels, duplex arrangements, multi-bag housings or fabricated skid packages.

Broad Media Selection

Filter bags are available in felt, mesh, high-efficiency and specialty materials to suit different fluids and particle retention requirements.

Bag Filter Housing Options

Bag filter housings can be selected to suit flow rate, operating pressure, temperature, chemical compatibility and connection requirements. Common vessel configurations include single-bag housings, multi-bag housings, duplex arrangements and fabricated skid packages.

Housing materials may include stainless steel or compatible non-metallic materials depending on the application. Connection options can include threaded, flanged, socket or fusion-style arrangements depending on the vessel type and process requirements.

Filter Bag Options

Filter bags are available in different media types and micron ratings to suit the required particle removal performance. The correct filter bag should be selected based on the fluid, particle type, solids loading, temperature, chemical compatibility and allowable pressure drop.

Nominal-rated bags are commonly used for economical general-purpose filtration, while high-efficiency media may be selected where improved particle retention is required.

Micron ratingsFrom fine filtration through to coarse particle removal, depending on media type
Common materialsPolyester, polypropylene, nylon, PTFE and specialty filter media
Seal optionsPlastic ring, steel ring and sewn-in ring styles depending on bag type

Filter Bag Size and Flow Rate Guide

Flow rates vary depending on liquid viscosity, micron rating, solids loading and allowable pressure drop.

Bag SizeIndicative Flow RateApproximate Bag DimensionsApproximate Flow Area
Size 0120,000 litres per hourØ178 mm × 420 mm0.24 m²
Size 0240,000 litres per hourØ178 mm × 810 mm0.48 m²
Size 036,000 litres per hourØ102 mm × 230 mm0.08 m²
Size 0412,000 litres per hourØ102 mm × 410 mm0.16 m²
Important: These flow rates are a guide only and are typically based on water at approximately 1 cP viscosity through a nominal-rated filter bag. Actual flow capacity depends on filter bag media, micron rating, liquid viscosity, solids loading, temperature and allowable pressure drop.

Nominal and High-Efficiency Filter Bags

Filter bags are often described as either nominal-rated or high-efficiency media. A nominal rating is a general indication of the particle size range that the bag is expected to remove under certain conditions. Nominal ratings are useful for product selection, but they should not be treated as an exact or absolute particle removal guarantee.

High-efficiency filter bags are selected where improved particle retention is required. These bags may provide more consistent removal performance, but they can also create higher pressure drop and may require more careful sizing.

Selection should consider:

  • Particle size and particle shape
  • Required filtration result
  • Nominal or high-efficiency media requirement
  • Fluid viscosity and temperature
  • Solids concentration and loading rate
  • Allowable clean and dirty pressure drop
  • Filter bag life and changeout frequency
  • Chemical compatibility with the fluid

How to Select a Bag Filter System

Correct bag filter selection starts with understanding the process. The vessel, bag size, media type and micron rating should be selected together so the system can handle the required flow without excessive pressure drop or short bag life.

A correctly sized system can reduce maintenance frequency, improve process reliability and help protect pumps, valves, spray nozzles, heat exchangers or other downstream equipment.

Useful information for selection:

  • Fluid type and chemical compatibility
  • Flow rate and operating schedule
  • Viscosity and temperature
  • Operating pressure and allowable pressure drop
  • Required micron rating or particle removal target
  • Solids loading and particle type
  • Connection size and connection standard
  • Preferred vessel material
  • Disposable bag or cleanable basket preference

Bag Filter FAQs

A bag filter system is used to remove suspended solids from compatible liquids. It is commonly used in process water, chemical, food and beverage, manufacturing, coatings and general industrial applications.

The vessel is the pressure housing installed in the process line. The filter bag is the replaceable filtration media installed inside the vessel and supported by a basket.

Common industry-standard sizes include Size 01, Size 02, Size 03 and Size 04. The correct size depends on flow rate, solids loading, filter bag media and available installation space.

In some applications, a cleanable stainless steel basket can be used instead of a disposable filter bag. This depends on the vessel design, required filtration rating, solids loading and maintenance preference.

Useful information includes fluid type, flow rate, viscosity, temperature, operating pressure, solids loading, required micron rating, connection size, vessel material and chemical compatibility requirements.
