Restricted Orifice Plates

Industrial Piping Application

Restricted Orifice Plates

Restricted Orifice Plates provide a simple, robust method of introducing a controlled restriction into a pipeline to limit flow or generate a required pressure drop.

Monarch Asia Pacific manufactures Restricted Orifice Plates in Australia to suit industrial piping and process applications, with plate dimensions, bore configuration, material and identification tailored to project requirements.

What is a Restricted Orifice Plate?

A Restricted Orifice Plate, often referred to as an RO plate or restriction orifice, is installed between pipeline flanges to create a deliberate restriction in the flow path. The reduced flow area creates a pressure loss across the plate and can be used to limit the amount of fluid passing through the line.

Unlike a control valve, a fixed restriction orifice has no moving parts. Once the bore geometry has been selected for the required operating condition, the plate provides a passive restriction whenever the system is operating.

Restricted orifice plates are generally selected for duties where the required flow or pressure relationship is sufficiently stable for a fixed restriction to be appropriate.

Typical objectives include:

  • Limiting maximum flow
  • Creating a defined pressure drop
  • Balancing parallel or branch flows
  • Protecting downstream equipment
  • Reducing flow through bypass or recirculation lines
  • Establishing a repeatable hydraulic restriction

Restricted Orifice Plate Applications

Restriction orifices are used where a simple fixed hydraulic restriction is suitable for the process duty.

Flow Limiting

Limit flow through a process, utility, bypass or branch line where a fixed restriction is appropriate.

Pressure Drop

Generate a specified pressure loss between upstream and downstream sections of a piping system.

Equipment Protection

Restrict flow to downstream equipment where excessive flow could affect operation or reliability.

Flow Balancing

Introduce controlled resistance into parallel or branch lines to assist with distribution of flow.

Comparison of restriction orifice and flow measurement orifice plates

Important Distinction

Restriction Orifice vs Flow Measurement Orifice

Although the components can appear similar, their primary purposes are different.

A flow measurement orifice plate is designed to create a differential pressure that is measured by instrumentation and used to calculate flow rate.

A restriction orifice plate is selected primarily to create a required hydraulic restriction, limit flow or produce a specified pressure loss. Differential pressure may still be measured for monitoring, but flow measurement is not its primary function.

Selection note: the bore for a restriction orifice should be calculated for the actual process conditions rather than selected from pipe size alone.

Restricted Orifice Bore Configurations

Bore geometry can be manufactured to suit the specified process, plate thickness and project requirements.

Straight bore restricted orifice plate

Straight Bore

A simple cylindrical bore through the plate, used where the specified geometry and plate thickness suit a straight opening.

Bevelled restricted orifice plate bore

Bore with Bevel

A machined bore incorporating a bevel to achieve the required edge geometry for the selected design.

Counterbored restricted orifice plate

Bore with Counterbore

A stepped or counterbored arrangement used where the design calls for a defined bore section within a thicker plate.

Segmental restricted orifice plate

Segmental Bore

A segment-shaped opening that may be considered for services where the process or solids characteristics favour a non-concentric opening.

Eccentric restricted orifice plate

Eccentric Bore

An off-centre circular opening that may be specified where drainage, venting or process characteristics make a concentric bore unsuitable.

Restricted Orifice Design Considerations

The required bore depends on the process conditions, not simply the nominal line size.

The required design flow and the upstream and downstream pressure conditions are fundamental to sizing the restriction. A bore selected for one operating point may produce a different result if system pressures or flow conditions change.

Density, viscosity, temperature and whether the fluid is a liquid, gas, steam or other compressible service affect the hydraulic behaviour through the restriction. Relevant process properties should be included with the sizing information.

Large pressure reductions can create demanding local conditions at the restriction. For liquid service, vapour pressure and the possibility of cavitation or flashing should be reviewed. For compressible fluids, choked-flow and velocity limitations may also need to be considered.

High velocities and large pressure drops may increase noise, vibration and erosion. These effects should be considered when reviewing plate thickness, bore design, material selection and whether a single-stage restriction is appropriate.

Where a large total pressure reduction is required, dividing the duty across multiple restriction stages may be considered to manage process limitations. The number and arrangement of stages should be determined from the specific hydraulic and mechanical design requirements.

Information Required for an RO Plate Enquiry

The most accurate way to manufacture a Restricted Orifice Plate is from an approved engineering drawing or datasheet that identifies the required plate dimensions, bore and material.

Where hydraulic sizing assistance is required, sufficient process information is needed to define the required restriction and check that the proposed operating condition is suitable.

Monarch can manufacture from customer drawings, datasheets or specified dimensions and can assist with practical manufacturing details and material selection.

Useful information includes:

  • Nominal pipe size and pipe schedule
  • Flange standard and pressure class
  • Required design flow rate
  • Minimum, normal and maximum flow where applicable
  • Upstream pressure
  • Required downstream pressure or pressure drop
  • Operating and design temperature
  • Fluid description and phase
  • Density / specific gravity
  • Viscosity
  • Vapour pressure for liquid service where relevant
  • Molecular weight / compressibility information for gas service where relevant
  • Required material grade
  • Plate thickness and outside dimensions if already specified
  • Bore diameter and bore geometry if already calculated
  • Tag number and marking requirements
  • Quantity and documentation requirements

Restricted Orifice Plate FAQs

A Restricted Orifice Plate is installed in a pipeline to introduce a deliberate flow restriction and pressure drop. It may be used to limit flow, balance a process, protect downstream equipment or establish a required hydraulic operating condition.

A measurement orifice plate is primarily used with differential-pressure instrumentation to determine flow rate. A restriction orifice plate is primarily selected to create a required pressure loss or restrict flow.

Yes. Restricted Orifice Plates can be manufactured to suit specified plate dimensions, bore size and geometry, material, flange arrangement and project identification requirements.

Sizing normally requires the design flow rate, upstream and required downstream pressure, fluid type and phase, density, viscosity, operating temperature, line size and fluid vapour pressure or other relevant thermodynamic properties.

Where a large pressure reduction is required, the pressure drop may need to be divided across multiple stages to address velocity, noise, cavitation, flashing or other process limitations. The arrangement should be assessed for the specific service.
